…sometimes a falling star, cleaving the dark, traces the breath of the night on my window glass, and in that instantaneous flash I might see the very line for which I searched in vain for months and months.
Naum Gabo, 1944
Many of the artists in the Pier Arts Centre’s Collection were deeply interested in the parallels between geometric patterns in art and nature. The forms and surfaces found in shells, rocks and plants, for instance, are often used as a starting point for exploring the world through colour, texture and line.
The works in this new display were all produced through the art of printmaking and include the techniques of etching, lithography, screen-print and monoprint.
The exhibition includes work by Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Anish Kapoor and Sylvia Wishart among others.
