Islands: Impromptus is an exhibition of new work by Orcadian artist by Sigurd Smith, and is the last in the Pier Arts Centre’s Orkney and the Artist series of exhibitions, highlighting the work of Orkney artists.
Sigurd Smith graduated from the Orkney College UHI in 2014 with a degree in Fine Art. Since graduating Sigurd has been involved in various cultural projects in Orkney, from contributing to the digitisation of the Gunnie Moberg Archive to co-founding the Móti Collective with other Orkney-based art graduates.
Sigurd’s work takes inspiration from the Orkney landscape, focussing on personal interpretation rather than a realistic depiction of his surroundings. The resulting drawings are bold and atmospheric and display a strong sense of place. Since last exhibiting in 2019 at The Old Library in Kirkwall Sigurd has continued to work with a limited palette of blacks and greys, with the newer work offering a tiny glimpse of colour.
