Jerwood Makers Open

  • The Pier Arts Centre 28- 36 Victoria Street Stromness Orkney (map)

The Jerwood Makers Open recognises and promotes the significance of making, practice and process within contemporary visual arts and offers the opportunity for makers at an early stage in their career to develop their creative ideas. The exhibition of newly commissioned work includes embroidery, paper cutting, jewellery, photography and film installation. Commissions were awarded to textile artist Roanna Wells, paper artist Nahoko Kojima, ceramicist Adam Buick, jeweller Linda Brothwell and conceptual maker Maisie Broadhead affording them a unique opportunity to freely develop new ideas central to their individual practice.

This year’s five selected artists each employ high quality craftsmanship to explore and challenge traditional thinking in applied arts.

Orkney has an established reputation for the quality of its craft and design work – for the innovation of its contemporary designers and makers as well as those working with traditional skills and materials.

The exhibition is accompanied by a showcase of work from the Orkney Craft Association. This is presented in the Pier Arts Centre Shop where items promoted under the Made in Orkney label are also displayed.
