This project brings together two of the Pier Arts Centre’s on-going programmes – Piergroup and our work with BA(Hons) students at Orkney College, and is the result of several months of creative exchange with artist Neville Gabie.
Following his exhibition toandFRO, presented at the gallery in Autumn last year, Gabie was keen to extend his involvement with the Centre and in particular with young people.
His suggestion and enthusiasm for an exchange project – with two sketchbooks and a box of materials, all with a thought-provoking statement or definition of the word ‘endeavour’, being passed from person to person, back and forth – has generated a wealth of artistic endeavour.
As part of her Professional Practice Module, BA Level 3 student, Beccy May, elected to participate in the curation and presentation of this exhibition, working with gallery staff to gain experience of working within a gallery environment. The resulting exhibition presents a selection of work in a wide variety of media that highlights the interaction and journeying of each of the participants from first sketches through to finished artworks.
