Join us for an online talk and discussion to celebrate the launch of a new publication of “Ilana Halperin: The Rock Cycle (Yamaguchi)” project.

The event is free of charge but booking is essential. Click here to book your place >

By booking and attending this event, you will be entitled to purchase one book with a special reduced cost of £10 + P&P (the normal price is £12 + P&P).

Facilitated by the project curator Naoko Mabon, the event opens with a performative talk by the artist Ilana Halperin, tracing the slow yet intimate process of the cross-disciplinary and bilateral investigation, exchange and production that have happened to date since 2018. Ilana and Naoko then will be joined by their three key colleagues from Yamaguchi who contributed to the publication to make a conversation: Yoshihisa Nakano (Artist, and Professor at Yamaguchi University); Keijiro Suzuki (Contemporary Artist); and Kazuhiro Tanaka (Professor Emeritus, Trustee, and Vice President at Yamaguchi University). They will exchange views and experiences on their involvement in the project from different perspectives. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

On 5 May, the National Children's Day in Japan, as part of this book launch celebration there will be a short recording of a Kazaguruma (hand-held windmill) making workshop by Keijiro Suzuki, published through The Pier Arts Centre’s social media channels. Please join and share pictures of your windmill!

This event acts as a bridge between the project activities in Japan and Scotland - the Scottish exhibition at The Pier Arts Centre in Autumn 2020 has been postponed and is now planned to be held in Autumn 2022.

Please note: The event will be conducted in English language. The event will be recorded and an edited version of the recording will be published online thereafter.

The Rock Cycle (Yamaguchi) is an official event of the Japan Season of Culture, and an affiliate programme of UK in JAPAN.
