Neville Gabie has travelled the world creating films, drawings and performances that seek to get under the skin of places and communities. toandFRO brings together work in a variety of media that reflects time spent in locations as diverse as Antarctica, South Africa and Achiltibuie.
From city street to fragile, often distant landscapes, Gabie’s work is a response to the inherent fluidity of place. His interest is in establishing a relationship within a particular community as a means of considering the physical, cultural or emotional geography.
‘If there is just one thing you take from my work, then it is about trying to make connections between people and place. It is an attempt to understand my own relationship to the world in which I find myself.’

This important new survey of work, co-curated by the Pier Arts Centre and Susan Christie, explores the way in which collaboration is a critical aspect of Neville’s practice from small-scale intimate relationships to working at a highly complex level with a politically charged series of international partners.
As part of the exhibition Neville Gabie did a performance from the Experiments in black and white series. A film of the performance can be seen here >
