Stands Scotland Where She Did? – Timothy Neat

  • The Pier Arts Centre 28-36 Victoria Street Stromness Orkney (map)

Timothy Neat is one of the most significant figures working in Scottish cultural life today. As an artist, writer, art historian, photographer and film maker he has documented both traditional and contemporary life in Scotland over the last fifty years.

His interests are broad and interdisciplinary and this exhibition brings together a selection of work from his personal archive celebrating his many collaborations and friendships with poets, thinkers and artists including John Berger, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Hamish Henderson.

He has written extensively on key aspects of Scottish culture and has a keen knowledge of and interest in the traditions of Scotland’s travelling people and the singers, story-tellers and crofters of the Highlands.

In 1987, Michael Kustow at Channel 4 commissioned Neat to make the film Time is a Country about Margaret Gardiner (1904-2005) founder of the Pier Arts Centre.

He moved to Scotland in 1968, teaching art history at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1973-88. He continues to live and work in Fife.

The exhibition is presented in association with Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen where the exhibition was first shown in 2013 to mark the artist’s 70th birthday.
