Boyd & Grogan Women Onboard, 2021 © the artists
This exhibition by Orkney artists Boyd & Grogan highlights and explores aspects of a woman’s role and position within our society.
Susan Boyd and Kristel Grogan have been collaborating on creative projects since they met and studied together for their BA Fine Art Textiles degrees at Orkney College UHI in 2011.
Through investigating the expectations that our social structures place on women, and the often invisible workloads and emotional pressures that are experienced by women whilst carrying the main burden of domestic responsibilities Boyd & Grogan have created a mixed media installation, including ceramics and photography.
The display highlights a wide range of issues including the importance placed on women’s appearance, the hunger strikes undertaken by women of the Suffragette movement, and the superstitious fear that women would bring bad luck if on board a ship at sea.
